ADA Toilet Partition Requirements
ADA Stall Dimensions, Clearances & Compliance Guide
Understanding ADA bathroom partition requirements is essential when designing accessible restrooms for commercial buildings, schools, healthcare facilities, government buildings, and public accommodations.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) establishes minimum requirements for toilet compartment dimensions, door clearances, grab bars, maneuvering space, and partition layouts to ensure restroom accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
This guide summarizes the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and provides practical guidance for selecting ADA-compliant restroom partitions and layouts.
Quick ADA Requirements At A Glance
- 60″ minimum stall width
- 56″ minimum depth (wall-hung toilet)
- 59″ minimum depth (floor-mounted toilet)
- 32″ minimum clear door opening
- 60″ turning space
- 33″-36″ grab bar height

What the ADA Requires for Bathroom Partitions
ADA restroom partitions must be designed and installed to maintain the clearances required for wheelchair users and individuals with mobility limitations.
Partition placement directly affects:
- Accessible toilet compartment dimensions
- Door maneuvering clearance
- Wheelchair turning space
- Grab bar installation
- Accessible routes
- Privacy and user safety
ADA compliance applies to most:
- Office buildings
- Retail stores
- Restaurants
- Schools
- Universities
- Healthcare facilities
- Government buildings
- Public accommodations

ADA Accessible Stall Dimensions
ADA standards specify minimum stall dimensions to ensure adequate wheelchair access, turning space, and safe use of restroom facilities. According to ADA 2025 guidelines:
ADA applies to: Commercial buildings, School, Healthcare facilities, Government buildings
| ADA Requirement | ADA Minimum |
|---|---|
| Accessible stall width | 60 inches (5 feet) minimum |
| Stall depth (wall-mounted toilet) | 56 inches minimum |
| Stall depth (floor-mounted toilet) | 59 inches minimum |
| Door clear opening width | 32 inches minimum |
| Turning space | 60-inch diameter or T-turn |
| Toilet centerline | 16–18 inches from nearest side wall/partition |
| Grab bar height | 33–36 inches above finished floor |
ADA Toilet Stall Door Requirements
Door design is one of the most common causes of ADA violations.
ADA-compliant toilet compartment doors must:
- Provide 32″ clear opening
- Be self-closing
- Include accessible hardware
- Maintain required maneuvering clearance
- Not obstruct required floor space
This is well established in ADA 2010 Standards (Section 604).
Toilet Location and Required Clear Floor Space
he centerline of the toilet must be:
16″-18″ from the nearest side wall or partition.
The required clear floor space must remain free of:
- Trash cans
- Baby changing stations
- Partition supports
- Plumbing obstructions
ADA Grab Bar Requirements in Accessible Stalls
ADA requires grab bars on both the side wall and rear wall of accessible compartments.
Side Grab Bar
- 42″ minimum length
- Starts 12″ max from rear wall
Rear Grab Bar
- 36″ minimum length
Height
- 33″-36″ AFF
Then include:
- dimension diagram
- installation graphic
The Bobrick guide has excellent examples.

ADA Partition Height and Toe Clearance Requirements
Toilet compartment partitions must provide sufficient toe clearance for wheelchair users.
Toe Clearance
ADA requires:
- 9″ minimum height
- 6″ minimum depth
Applicable to:
- Front partition
- At least one side partition
Then explain exceptions for oversized compartments.
What is the minimum ADA stall width?
At least 60 inches (5 feet) wide.
Can a small restroom be ADA compliant?
Yes, if clearances and turning space requirements are met.
How wide must the ADA door opening be?
At least 32 inches of clear width when the door is open 90°.
Do all stalls need to be ADA compliant?
Only at least one accessible stall is required per restroom (more in larger facilities).
